The Modern RCQ season is in full swing so I wanted to revive my Paper Tips series. As I watch paper Magic coverage I see small edges given away that could turn a mediocre day into a Regional Championship invite. I’ve been playing primarily paper Magic tournaments since 2001 and I’ve picked up plenty of tricks along the way. Today I’m going to discuss Modern-specific and tournament tips.
After splitting the finals of an RCQ with Golgari Midrange I tested my mettle at RIW’s qualifier last weekend. I’m pleased to report I piloted Golgari to an undefeated record into a top 4 split.
We’re just weeks away from the B&R update on December 16 where The One Ring is likely to be removed from Modern.
The Standard RCQ season is in full swing and the metagame is looking healthy with a handful of decks realistically able to take down any tournament. The barrier to entry for paper Standard was a concern for me at the start of the season, but most of the valuable cards have multi-format utility. Being able to test each deck on Arena has also been a boon. Today I’m going to share my deck choice for RIW’s upcoming RCQ on March 9: Azorius Control.
For those planning to attend this weekend’s RIW Pauper 1K on November 12th, I wanted to pass on some wisdom I learned from past Pauper 1Ks that I’ve attended at RIW in the past. First, I’ll cover what to expect in a general magic tournament sense, and then we’ll dive into what to accept about some Magic strategy topics to think about heading into Saturday. Let’s get started!
