It’s been an exciting past two weeks of Weds Night Weeklies and this upcoming week is going to be packed with Pauper at RIW Hobbies because we not only have a Weds Weekly but also a Major Championship Eventing on Saturday!
Hey everyone!
The next flagship event in the RIW Pauper Championship Series is coming up on June 6. Ben Topping and I will be calling the action and I’m excited.
Today I’m going to talk about the Pauper metagame as well as the strategy I would play, Jund Wildfire.
Before jumping into today’s topic, I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about myself to help provide some context. I have been playing Magic: The Gathering at a somewhat competitive level since the early 2010’s, with some breaks between then and now. I was primarily a Legacy player, but have also been playing Pauper since what seems like the early days of the format. The earliest event that I participated in on MTGO was in October 2012, at least that is what I could find in my MTGO game record….
Welcome back to the second issue of RIW PAUPER CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKLY! This upcoming Saturday is the next large event for the series, which makes this week’s Weds Night tournament a special one; since, it’s the last chance for players to participate in some IRL testing before the marquee event this weekend.
Welcome to the inaugural issue of RIW PAUPER CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKLY! Since this is the 1st one, I’ll start with a little bit about what this series is…
Basically, as the title suggests, the plan is to put out a weekly article chronicling what’s going on in Pauper at the shop at our Wednesday 6PM events for the Pauper Championship Series.
My name is Christopher Sheppard, recent winner of the RIW March RCQ. Today, I am breaking down Spellementals, the deck I used to lock up my invite to Cincinnati.
A Little About Me…
I’ve been playing Magic on and off since Onslaught, originally grinding MTGO from 2005–2011 under the user name TheUsualSuspect. I came back to competitive magic about two years ago.
It has been a while since I’ve written about Modern, but I’m here today with a fresh take on Jeskai Blink. I’ve been playing a good amount of Modern and made some changes worth discussing.
Hey everyone!
I’m back from RIW’s second flagship event in the Pauper Championship Series. I didn’t make the Top 16 (or better) this time around, but the tournament was a lot of fun.
I took down a Standard RCQ last weekend with an old favorite, Dimir Midrange. I’m looking to get another strong finish at RIW’s upcoming RCQ this weekend. Thankfully WOTC didn’t change Standard in their latest B&R update so we’re good to keep practicing the same format.
Despite my affinity for Modern and being knee-deep in the Standard RCQ season, I’ve been getting back into Pauper for RIW’s Pauper Championship Series. Not only are there eight major events this year, but also a 5K invitational in December 2026 for the top 16 point leaders that pays out to all participants.
